Pre-Op Instructions

• Confirm Surgery Date & Time: Ensure you have the correct date and time for your procedure.
• Pre-operative Testing: Complete all required tests, such as blood work, EKG, chest X-rays, or pulmonary function studies, 2–4 weeks before surgery.

Stop taking the following meds and supplements five to seven days before surgery. These drugs may affect blood clotting and raise your risk of severe bleeding during or after surgery. If you’re taking any of these drugs, tell your spine doctor.

• Blood Thinners such as: aspirin, ibuprofen, Plavix, Coumadin. Stop taking 5–7 days before surgery.
• Anti-Inflammatories such as: (e.g., Advil, Aleve). Stop taking one week prior to surgery.
• Supplements: vitamin E, fish oil, ginseng, garlic, and other herbal supplements. Stop taking 1–2 weeks before your surgery.
• Morning of Surgery: Take essential medications (e.g., blood pressure, diabetes) with a small sip of water unless otherwise directed.

• Smoking: Stop smoking at least 4–6 weeks before surgery to reduce the risk of complications and improve your recovery.
• Alcohol: Avoid alcohol consumption at least 24 hours before surgery to prevent interactions with anesthesia.
• Nutrition & Physical Activity: Eat a balanced diet and continue with light activities that don’t cause pain.

• Antibacterial Wash: Use Hibiclens or another prescribed antibacterial soap for showers the night before and the morning of surgery. Focus on the surgical area.
• Personal Care: Do not apply makeup, lotion, perfume, or deodorant on the day of surgery.

• Prepare Your Home: Set up a recovery area with necessary items like medications, ice packs, and comfortable seating.
• Arrange Transportation: Have someone take you home, since you won’t be able to drive for 24 hours.
• Postoperative Care: Plan for assistance with daily activities during the initial recovery period.

• Arrival at Hospital: Arrive at the hospital at the scheduled time to allow for preoperative preparations.
• Food and Drink: Do not eat or drink anything after midnight before your surgery. Certain drugs can be taken with small sips of water, but nothing else should be swallowed unless specifically instructed by your surgeon.
• Personal Items: Leave valuables at home. Bring your valid ID, insurance details, and a list of current medications.
